GTAAA Artifacts from the 1960s & 1970s
This is a collection of images of papers kept by
Richard H. Branton.
These have been donated to Ga Tech History Group. Most have to do with the GTAAA (Georgia Tech Afro-American Association). Some are on display in the Ga Tech Library. I will be scanning, uploading and turning over additional papers as I have time.
If you have papers, photos, etc. that can be added, please contact me. I hope to have a more rigorous website sometime in the future.
Enjoy.

Party Announcement
We had a lot of parties where students could blow off steam. We also taught freshmen geeks how to dance and made sure no girl was sitting down at one of our parties.
Because we were off campus, we could have a party anytime; and did. We also made multiple trips to AUC.
Before the Black House, we had parties in hotels, especially the American downtown, Mark Inn, and Pascals.

The Initial Purpose of GTAAA

Solicitation for a GTAAA Sponsor
This was a solicitation for a sponsor for GTAAA. I believe three professors responded. Spurill, Foote, Schutz. We selected Bud Foote because he offered to support us and not come to our meetings as long as we kept him informed and "gave him heads-up if we were going to do something that would get him fired". It was his understanding of us and our needs and his trust that we selected him.

GTAAA Description

Black Freshman Weekend at the Original Black House
GTAAA went all out to greet and care for incoming freshmen. This document show the concerns they had. It also shows the location original Black House on Luckie St.

Letter from Tech Controller to Chair of Student Government Finance Committee
I don't remember the specifics of the meeting. Most likely, it was about funding of GTAAA sponsored public events. if anyone remembers the specifics, please let me know.
The text reads:
Dear Mr. Dash:
Seven representatives of the GTAAA came by my office on Friday, February 13, 1970. Mr. Richard H. Branton gave me a verbal report on what will become a formal proposal to the administration of Georgia Tech. His report was very well organized and covered many interesting points. We discussed briefly certain points and will take any time needed to implement the program as presented in a formal way at a later date. Mr. Branton stted that in his opinion there was not sufficient communication between the Business Office and GTAAA. I suggested meetings at fixed intervals with representative of the Business Office and GTAAA attending as a possible means of closing the communication gap. I have no doubt that a healthy program may be developed with the help of these young men.
Sincerely

Panel Invite to Vincent Hardin
s was one of several letters inviting speakers to a Black History Month panel discussion.

Call for meeting in support of black campus workers
There were a number of issues regarding the treatment of Black buildings and grounds workers, cafeteria, and others. These included terminating employees with decades of service a year of two before they would be eligible to draw pensions. We were outraged at the treatment and rallied allies and other concerned individuals to shine a light on the treatment and correct it.

Proposal for Employee Benefits
This was one of several proposals I made to GA Tech Administration with the support of a number of organizations and students.

Flyer for a Program GTAAA helped sponsor
The event was scheduled and then there was pressure on Tech to withdraw permission but we and others protested and Tech allowed it to go forward. I (Richard Branton) red

Student Government Sponsored Program
GTAAA has secured an agreement from the Student Government Association to sponsor more Black speakers, entertainers, and others.

The Initial Idea that Led to the Dual Degree Program
This was the first thoughts before researching how a Dual Degree program might work. Our goal was to find a way to address the Black Brain Drain from Atlanta University and other HBCU and still have engineers and grow Tech's minority and women population. Rhb

Dual Degree Program
This was the second pass in flushing out thoughts on a dual degree program. The final version flushed out and typed has been lost. It specifically singled out the Atlanta University Complex and noted that the Number 42 bus ran between the two campuses (about a 20 minute ride) make taking courses in both places practical. It also provided for joint enrollment from Freshman year on; address finances and other practical concerns. It also noted that Black colledges were better equipped to close the education gap that resulted from segregated schools and thereby increase the probability of student success at Tech.

The 3-2 Plan that was in Place
That Tech had a 3-2 program already made convincing Tech to expand it to the Atlanta University Center (and Agnes Scott) a lot easier. It also helped that some of the colleges currently involved were private schools. So it would be hard to argue against extending it to AUC and Agnes Scott. I felt that including Agnes Scott would make it more palatable.

This was one of several proposals I made to GA Tech Administration with the support of a number of organizations and students. This was accepted and I was one of the early beneficiaries receiving more than 20 hours credit for Information and Computer Science courses.
